What Is A Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation (also called a psychiatric assessment or mental health evaluation) is a comprehensive interview and review process designed to:
Understand your current symptoms and how they're affecting your daily life
Review your complete mental health history and any previous treatments
Assess your medical history, as physical health can significantly impact mental wellness
Evaluate family history and environmental factors that may contribute to your condition
Provide an accurate psychiatric diagnosis
Create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals
This thorough assessment serves as the roadmap for your mental health treatment, ensuring you receive care that’s truly right for you—not a generic, one-size-fits-all approach.
What To Expect During Your Evaluation
We understand that meeting with a psychiatric provider for the first time can feel overwhelming or intimidating. Here’s exactly what to expect to help ease any anxiety:
Before Your Appointment
- We’ll send you intake forms to complete ahead of time (you can fill these out at home)
- Gather a list of current medications, vitamins, or supplements you’re taking
- If available, bring records from previous mental health treatment
- Think about the symptoms that brought you in and when they started
- Bring your insurance card
During Your Evaluation (60-90 minutes)
Welcome & Comfort: We start by making sure you feel comfortable and safe. We’ll explain the evaluation process and answer any questions you have about what to expect.
Current Concerns: We discuss what’s been troubling you—your symptoms, when they started, how they’re impacting your work, relationships, and daily activities, and what you’ve already tried.
Mental Health History: We review any previous mental health diagnoses, treatments, medications, therapy, or hospitalizations.
Medical & Social History: We discuss your physical health, current medications, substance use, family psychiatric history, life circumstances, relationships, and support system.
Mental Status Exam: We assess your current mental state, including mood, thought processes, cognitive function, and safety.
Diagnosis & Treatment Plan: We provide a clear explanation of our diagnostic impressions and discuss recommended treatment options, answering all your questions.
After Your Evaluation
- You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis (in plain language, not medical jargon)
- A personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs
- Clear next steps for beginning treatment (if medication is recommended)
- Referrals for therapy or other supportive services if appropriate
- Answers to all your questions about your diagnosis and treatment options
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for a psychiatric evaluation?
In most cases, no referral is needed—you can schedule directly with our office. However, some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care physician. We recommend checking your specific insurance requirements when you call to schedule. We’re happy to help you navigate this process.
What's the difference between a psychiatric evaluation and therapy?
A psychiatric evaluation is a diagnostic assessment focused on identifying mental health conditions and creating a treatment plan—often involving medication. It’s typically a one-time or occasional appointment. Therapy (psychotherapy or counseling) is ongoingtreatment that helps you develop coping skills, process emotions, and change thought patterns through regular sessions. Many people benefit from both medication management and therapy working together. We can help coordinate both if that’s what you need.
Will I be prescribed medication after my evaluation?
Not necessarily. Medication is one potential treatment option, but it’s not automatic or required. Based on your evaluation, we may recommend medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches. The decision is always collaborative—we’ll explain all options, discuss the pros and cons, and make sure you feel comfortable with the treatment plan. You’re never pressured into taking medication if you’re not ready or comfortable with that approach.
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
Initial psychiatric evaluations typically take 60-90 minutes. We intentionally schedule longer appointments to ensure we have adequate time to understand your complete story without feeling rushed. Your mental health deserves more than a quick 15-minute visit—we give you the time and attention necessary for a thorough, accurate evaluation.
Is my psychiatric evaluation confidential?
Yes, absolutely. Your evaluation and all mental health information are strictly confidential and protected by HIPAA privacy laws. We will not share your information without your written consent, except in very limited circumstances required by law (such as imminent danger to yourself or others, or suspected child/elder abuse). Your privacy and trust are paramount.
Can I bring someone with me to my evaluation?
Absolutely! If having a supportive family member or friend with you makes you feel more comfortable, they’re welcome to attend. Sometimes loved ones can provide valuable information about your symptoms and history that you might not think to mention. Just let us know your preference when scheduling—it’s entirely your choice.
